Two MHS students, three elementary students honored in statewide art competition

Two Marion High School students and three Marion elementary students were selected as regional winners in a prestigious statewide art exhibition.

Madelynn Boogar, MHS junior, and Gwynneth Hamilton, MHS senior, were both honored for their drawings submitted to the Juried Exhibition of Student Art in conjunction with the Quadrennial International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, a unique showcase for the world’s most gifted young violinists. The three elementary students also chosen for the honor were Orion Coffey, Riverview Elementary 2nd-grader, Mayvani Gray, Allen Elementary 4th-grader, and Ja'Marla Hill, Allen Elementary 2nd-grader.

More than 11,000 students from across the state in grades 1 through 12 submitted work for this competition, which integrates the performing and visual arts. A panel of judges selected 150 regional winners. From those winners, 30 were selected as grand award winners (which are displayed online and will be exhibited during the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis in the fall).

Since 1982, the International Violin Competition has been held every four years, when 40 of the world’s brightest talents come to Indianapolis to perform some of the most beautiful music ever written before enthusiastic audiences. Musicians and music lovers from all parts of the world focus their attention on Indianapolis and the International Violin Competition, regarded as the Western Hemisphere’s “Olympics of the Violin.”

In 1986, the visual art exhibition was added. The Marion students’ selection as award winners this year is an outstanding honor!
